Kimiaki Kageyama one of the most important Japanese Master Goldsmiths will introduce Japanese copper alloys and their coloring. In Japan, coloring metals has been experimented since 4th~5th century.  Direct coloring began around the end of the Heian period (794-1185) but it is during the Muromachi period (1330-1568) that the development of various kinds of copper alloys suitable for coloring flourished.
The alloys will be produced in traditional way and students can select different alloys to develop their personal concepts. Special technical issues and tools will be introduced during  various stages of  the working process.   Special focus will be set on finishings, as polishing with particular charcoals and coloring.

Last year was the first Alchimia encounter with Sieraad (Dutch word for jewellery) fair in Amsterdam, an appointment we believe has already become a must for all those interested in jewellery.

With great pleasure this year the school was invited to participate with an exhibition of the 2012 graduates.

The fair is located in the Westergasfabriek, a beautiful and charming industrial building of the turn of last century that transforms the usual aseptic environment of fairs in a much more staged and theatrical setting, indeed stimulating more creative approaches to booths and facilitating the viewers’ immersion (and attention to) in the visit.

85 jewelers  were participating, mostly from Europe but not only, with very recent creations. And we can say we were indeed extremely happy to see such a numerous public.

Besides the graduates work in the school booth, three of Alchimia graduates were showing their professional independent work, and we are very proud of them: Catalina Brenes, Carissa Hsu and Camilla Teglio

Exhibiting at a fair is an important experience for students and young professionals. It is vital to see comparatively the work and approach of colleagues, analyze the work of galleries and so the related paths different institutions are taking, see clients and their different tastes and customs due to lifestyle and climate. It is also a unique opportunity to encounter a big number of other professionals and so possibly engage in discussions as well as try out the ‘going public’  within an ‘experts’ environment.

We found particularly interesting the work of Tzuri Gueta www.tzurigueta.com, designer and artist based in Paris and the colourful fimo and resin creations of Jilian Moore, who was just in time because of the hurricane Sandy.

A reflection on the preservation of worldwide cultural heritage, on the reassessment of symbol bearers, on the creation of new traditions and on the simultaneous revival of old ones in a new form, was the purpose of this year’s” New Traditional Jewellery” contest with the title “New Nomads”.

The Jury was composed of: Isabella van den Bos, verzamelaar sieraadkunst, voorzitter Foundation Art in Business Els van der Plas, directeur, Premsela, Dutch Platform for Design and Fashion, Herman Hermsen; sieraadkunstenaar en Professor f r Schmuck- und Produktdesign Fachhochschule D sseldorf University of Applied Sciences. Marjan Unger, art historian and publicist ; Theo Smeets, University of Applied Sciences Trier – Dept. Gemstone & Jewellery Design – Campus Idar- Oberstein; AZIZ, fashion designer/artistEveline Holsappel, Curator applied art and design, Museum voor Moderne Kunst, Arnhem.Chequita Nahar; jewellery designer, Coordinator Department Jewellery & Product Design, Academie Beeldende Kunsten Maastricht.

These were the chose winners, within  3 categories:

Heester Popma-van de Kolk (NL)

Title: Wearable home ( two-sided necklace)   material: chips from sim cards, credit cards, telephone cards, yarn

The chips are woven together with yarn to form a flexible square mat. One side is decorated, the other is gold. The yarn remains visible as a reference to the contacts that are made using chips. “This necklace is only done justice when it is worn” says the jury. “In several, playful ways things are hidden and things are made visible, and at all times only one side of the necklace is visible. The decorated side refers to the issues of the day: time, communication, money. The golden side calls up associations of illustrious civilizations, like the Egypt of the pharaohs and the Mayas. At the same time the chips contain information not visible to the naked eye. This necklace is a bridge in time”.

Sang-Hee Park (ROK)

Title: To have a dream-To pursue a dream (brooch)  Material: goldplated copper, acrylic

Category students:   Maryvonne Wellen  (NL), Juliane Keßler (D), Patricia Correia Domingues (P)

Juliane Kessler

Title: Traffic sign (brooch)   Material: aluminium, steel

Juliane Keßler: ” Some animals roam the world, using the currents of the wind and the sea for transport. We, the new nomads, consume a lot of fossil energy for our fast progress. Overall, economic efficiency dominates. I oppose this by recycling old traffic signs made of aluminum. Traffic signs regulate movements of people. It takes a lot of energy to transform this aluminum into jewellery with guilloches.”

Maryvonne Wellen

Title: Portrait of a clan member (necklace)  Material: Plaster, Z-corp 3D print, paint, onyx

Maryvonne Wellen:” After collecting and archiving pictures of ethnography, I categorized them into a Western, an Oceanic, an African, an Asian and an American group. I decided to bring those different traditions and cultures together in collages using one piece of jewelry of each group to create a mask-like composition. I chose to use a mask form not only because it’s an ancient form known all over the world, but also because it covers the face and makes it possible for the wearer to take on another identity. This piece represents the melting pot of cultures, dominating not only today’s big cities but the internet as well.”

Patricia Correia Domingues

Title: Reflections on landscape 3 (brooch)  Material: reconstructed ivory, foam, steel, silver

Patricia Correia Domingues: ” We have always been related to space. The places we traversed were the places where human evolution developed. They are crossings, places of reflection, shaped by human hand. Mankind is walking, moving, displacing and generating movements. Being nomadic means not only moving or being displaced, but also finding a place to rest, like a rhythm. Periods of reflection alternate with times of accelerated development. I believe my jewellery is about this timeless rhythm, where the past belongs to the future and the future relates to the past. the old and new became the expression of my imagination. This is my luggage; these are the tools that enrich my perception. My material.”

Interesting works, for different reasons, and indeed completed by in depth (from more personal to more sociological) research.

We look definitely forward to next year!

The last week we passed to fine tune the Graduation Show “Purus” .
All was ready concept, layout, press release, publicity…………

except : THE REAL THING

Fortunately we had

Giulia

and of course many others

there is so much work to do and even if you know beforehand exactly what you want and how you think to achieve it..

there are always details that do not turn out as you expected, new decisions to take..

need for rapid adjustment, ideas if technical issues do not work as expected

but then when things slowly take form and become clear, turn out maybe even better than expected

then you understand that the energy you have put in was worth while

but there was not only the graduation show to prepare but  also the End of the Year exhibition of the second and the third year…

Lucia, Peter and all the students are still working to get it all done

for Thursday 14.th of June 2012 at 6 p.m.

(big problem, at this precise hour Italy is playing against Croatia in the European Soccer Championship)

but somebody will come, we are sure

At Valencia Melting Point

As always the report comes a bit late, but there are some other sites that were faster than us. Please take a look at them:

Valencia Melting Point, Hazardous Experiments, carolinagimeno Blog, Bijou_Contemporain Jewelry, Mardecolorrosa, chiarame, dorismaninger

But now lets start from the beginning

arrival in the evening and immediate start of set up work. Big, beautiful space, wonderful hosts, lots of beer, and some confusion

boxes full of experiments to open

The task was to open all of them, line the materials on the foam boards and only after go to eat, fortunately in Spain you can eat also at midnight

It was tough but we did it

and the next day was almost a miracle

The foam boards we had ordered were exactly the color of walls and floor tiles

the amount we had bought was exaclty the right one,

and what we had immagined worked out !!!!!!!

we could happily drink after hard work and wait for the visitors to come

and they came, young and old, and more and more

after a while there was no time for drinking and joking anymore

all the students had to work: explain, explain, explain

the later it got the more visitors came and the explanations got better and better

and probably also more inspired

once in while a little rest was allowed

we had real glasses, no plastic and nothing broke

it was a wonderful evening, warm and full with the smell of spring blossoms, and it was Spain

miraculously none of the foam boards fell and no experiment either

nothing was lost, no piece displaced, touched but not dispaced

we found many new friends, some known over the web but never seen as Marianne Gassier from Bijoucontemporain

or some of the members of the BORAX group

The teachers and students from EASD Escola d’Art i Superior de Disseny de València
who had organized all this, exhibitions, conferences, dinners, workshops had done a great job.

everybody asked questions and wanted to know about the materials and the working process

it was unusual for all to be able to touch freely the exhibited pieces

and this was a big part of the success of our exhibition

we were all  happy about this evening, it was one of the moments when you really feel sorry for the passing of  time.
IT was  the teamwork that had let to this result that made us particularly proud. We had done it all together and could be happy together, each one of the Hazardous Operations Team had been precious to the end result.

Here just some more pictures all taken by HaNa Choi who had the task to document the whole event

We have been telling a while ago about the marvellous project that is going on in Egypt.

And now we can invite you to the final exhibition!!!

Contemporary designs by Egyptian students in a European-Egyptian exhibition in Cairo

An exhibition featuring innovative jewellery pieces will open from 9 to 12 May in Cairo. This exhibition is the first of a series of exhibitions between Cairo and Aswan to showcase the designs of 45 Egyptian students who took place in an initiative by Azza Fahmy Jewellery co-funded by the European Union (EU).

Nubre, which means design in the Nubian language, is the first private sector initiative to support students with passion for design. It was launched initially with the core purpose of enforcing a “design culture” in Egypt and creating a bridge between local and European students.

The most significant outcome of this project is that the students would get the opportunity to showcase their talents by exhibiting their work to the public. Moreover, the Azza Fahmy Foundation will also offer the best students the opportunity to work on Azza Fahmy future design projects, in addition to multiple financial prizes and recognition.

Prior to the exhibition, four workshops were held in Aswan under the theme “Linking Heritage to Contemporary Design” with designers coming from some of the best Jewellery design schools in Europe: Doris Maninger from Alchimia, Ramon Puig from Massana and Christoph Zellweger from HEAD Geneva, and  Jean Power from the UK . The main focus of was finding inspiration, recognising it, understanding it and then knowing what to do with it. During the workshops, the students worked on their design concepts using materials from the environment, and then finished their pieces with the help of Azza Fahmy and corresponding with their instructors  after the workshops.

The first stop of the exhibition will be British Council in Agouza – Cairo from 9 till 12 May 2012. The exhibition will then move to other locations in Cairo in addition to Aswan.

This project is one of the projects funded by the Delegation of the European Union to Egypt in the framework of the annual EU Calls for Proposals for Cultural Activities.

For more information on NUBRE, please visit www.nubre.com

Many amazing pieces are the results of these workshops, traditional tiara’s but done with carrubs, brooches out of Nubian plates, the colours and the forms of the Nubian tradition reelaborated with surprising materials in necklaces and bracelets.

but for sure most of the pieces conserve the deep sense for ornament inherent in the Egyptian culture

crochet, ring in coated copper wire and beads

From the 2nd to the 4th of December Doris Maninger held her first weekend course in textile techniques in metal. 15 hours that at the end resulted almost 17 of intense work and the students could take home three finished pieces and a variety of samples. The course focused on crochet and free interlacing (a technique ivented by Lucia Massei and further developed by Doris), two techniques that give endless possibilities of variations and application to the most diverse materials.

free interlacing, braclet in 925 silver wire

From Friday afternoon to Sunday evening the students worked first on their samples in copper  and then completed a jewellery piece in silver to further exercise the technique and to understand what kind of problems and complications can occur in the finishing process.

crochet, pendant in coated aluminium wire

Doris Maninger is convinced that studying only the technical process, without application in a jewellery piece,  leaves  a kind of void at the end and the risk to forget soon is very high. “When you apply the apprehended technique immediately, you exercise and learn  about the many possiblities of  variation, plus the satisfaction of bringing a finished piece home.” , she says.

Giovanna’s happy face in front of her bracelet shows this clearly. She states “In finishing you also realize all the little problems that can occur, a lot of questions to the teacher come in to your mind, because you have the time to really reflect while making, and a lot of ideas for further pieces come into your mind.”

Of course there remains still a lot to learn and two practice but for 2 and 1/2 day the outcome was more than excellent.
It was pleasure says Doris to work with such diligent and passionate students.
